On Monday, President Joe Biden firmly asserted his position as the front-runner on the Democratic ticket for 2024, a critical week that will determine the course of his political career.
Despite doubts about his mental health and capacity for the 2024 campaign and a potential second term, Biden emphasized in a letter to congressional Democrats that he is not withdrawing. The 81-year-old president, who is the oldest in American history, also spoke with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program in an attempt to counter the mounting calls for him to resign.
“I’ve got a pretty good political instinct and here’s the deal, it’s not going to happen here,” Biden said. “This time around, the American public is not going to move away from me as the average voter.”
Four senior committee leaders on Sunday expressed their concern that it was time for the president to hand off the reins. To date, five Democrats on Capitol Hill have openly asked Biden to withdraw his reelection effort. There may be more Democrats who may come forward to request that Biden resign.
In a live phone interview on TV Monday morning, Joe Biden declared categorically that he will keep running for president.
“I want to make sure I was right, that the average voter out there wanted Joe Biden and I’m confident they do,” Biden said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “The bottom line here is that we are not going anywhere. I am not going anywhere. I would not be running if I didn’t believe I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024.”
The president claimed that mainstream voters would not abandon him and bemoaned the “elites” insistence that he step down, arguing that their analysis of previous elections was flawed.
Additionally, Biden made fun of presumed Republican nominee for president in 2024, Donald Trump, by labeling him a “liar.”
“This guy is gonna rip away at a woman’s right to choose in a permanent way. This guy is gonna make sure that he exacts revenge. This guy’s gonna destroy democracy,” Biden said.
